Union des Dirigeants Territoriaux de l’Europe (UDiTE)
The Union of Local Authority Chief Executives of Europe – started in Nancy, France, in March 1990, at the instigation of Gérard Combe, who was then secrétaire général of that city. The associations of chief executives in six countries were the founder members. The organisation established by Gérard Combe was originally known as the "Commission permanente des dirigeants territoriaux européens" – the Standing Committee of European Local Authority Chief Executives.

After the second meeting of the Standing Committee, in Dover in 1991, a permanent organisation was set up. It was thus that UDITE was formed in Barcelona in November 1991. Constituted according to the French law of 1901, it is a federation of professional associations which today represents local government in ten European countries.

The aim of the Union is to promote relations between the professional associations of Chief Executives representing European local authorities, to develop exchanges of information, to share professional experiences, to contribute to the enhancement of the role and functions of local authorities and to contribute to the European Union.

ILGM of South Africa
The Institute for Local Government Management of South Africa (ILGM) was formally established on 19 January 1996. The ILGM was born out of the ertswhile Institute of Town Clerks (ITC) of Southern Africa and the more recent Institute of Municipal Managers (IMM). This was after protracted negotiations between the National Executive Committee of the latter body and the National Working Group representing the interests of the then emerging managers in local government. Other key players in local government also took part in the negotiations, thereby making the process inclusive and extremely consultative. The negotiations led to an agreement which culminated in the formation of the all-inclusive professional body, ILGM, in Pretoria. From the outset the principles of accessibility, democracy, transformation, professionalism and representativity guided the negotiation process. These were enshrined in the constitution of ILGM.

The vision of ILGM is to enhance managerial expertise in Local Government in order to attain excellence in local governance.
