Membership of SOLACE is open to senior officers of all UK local authorities and public sector related organisations. Applications must be submitted in one of the following five categories.

Chief Executive (public sector organisations only)
Senior Manager (officers from public sector organisations who are head of service or a member of the senior management team)
Aspiring Managers (public sector managers aspiring to senior management)
Public Sector Graduates (graduates who are part of a recognised public sector scheme or are new to the public sector and would like to gain knowledge and expertise)
International (public sector officials)

The criteria for each category are:
Chief Executive:
Public Sector head of paid service or head of department in central government terms - whether or not formally designated as "Chief Executive".
Senior Executive:
Senior professional managers who report directly to the Chief Executive, are head of service or above or are part of the senior management team within a public sector organisation. Senior professional managers employed by related organisations who operate for the benefit of local government. Includes senior civil servants operating and liaising with local government.
Public Sector Graduates:
Members of recognised graduate or management development programmes in the public sector. The graduate scheme is also open to those who are new to the public sector and would like to learn more at a lower level. Officers who are members of overseas equivalent professional associations concerned with central, local or public authority management.
Past Service (Retired):
Only available to former members or International members who are fully retired i.e. receiving no additional income and not registered to undertake consultancy work.
Past Service (Working):
Only available to former members or International members who are registered as consultants, working as consultants or receiving a work related income.
