Council chief executives should pass a New Year’s resolution to publish full details of salaries and expenses – that’s the view of Northamptonshire County Council chief executive and President of SOLACE Katherine Kerswell.
From today full details of Katherine’s salary and expenses are being published on Northamptonshire County Council’s website on a new page dedicated to outlining the role of the council’s management team.
This will be followed up later in the year with details of all council expenditure over a set limit being published on the website and Katherine believes council chief executives across the country should act early in the year to follow suit.
She said: “It is clear that chief executive salaries is an issue which continues to generate emotive debate. It is my view that we must act now to show that as a sector we are committed to full transparency.
“We should not and need not wait for any new legislation instructing us to do this and indeed we should all be looking at other ways to improve our transparency and play our central role in rebuilding faith in local government.”
As well as details of the chief executive salary and expenses the council’s website will also make it easier for people to find out what councillors have claimed for.
Later this year the county council will also be using its website to publish a full list of all expenditure over a certain level to increase even further transparency.
