In the lead for the best quote of the SOLACE conference 2008 is presently the new Chairman of SOLACE, Derek Myers, with a line delivered in an exchange at the Credit Crunch Panel on Wednesday afternoon with efficiency guru Sir Peter Gershon.

 

Following a forthright presentation by David Clark on the impact on jobs of not just the credit crunch but also the whole financial backdrop for local government this year, the Chairman turned to Sir Peter and posed the following moral dilemma:

 

"Where do you think leadership duty lies Sir Peter?  Is it in inefficiency, with theft from the working classes or is it in the pursuit of efficiency with the relentless and cruel taking away of employment from ordinary people?"
