Michael Bichard has set out his vision of how design can innovate and solve problems in the public sector.
His interview by the Guardian comes in the wake of the latest issue of the SOLACE Foundation Imprint pamphlet,
Innovation by design in public services. The publication is edited by Emily Thomas of the Design Council. In a joint foreword with Clive Grace she said, “Design is key to the challenges of public service transformation. And those challenges are daunting.”
Sir Michael, The SFI Editor in Chief and now also the Chair of the Design Council, contributed his own article, Overcoming obstacles, to this edition of the SFI pamphlet. He suggests those obstacles to innovation include:
· Governance
· Capacity
· Incentives and rewards
· Structures
· Environment
· Investment
· Leadership
