Abdool Kara is the Executive Leader for Local Services at the National Audit Office. Before this, he was Chief Executive at Swale Borough Council from June 2009. Prior to this he had been Assistant Chief Executive of the London Borough of Merton Council for four years where he led the organization to a ‘four star, improving strongly’ rating from the Audit Commission in February 2009, the highest rating possible.
Abdool previously worked for the Audit Commission for seven years in a variety of roles, including Operations Manager for the Housing Inspectorate and latterly as Head of CPA (Comprehensive Performance Assessment) Policy. His time at the Commission included a six-month stint on placement as special adviser to the Cabinet Office on inspection policy.
Previous to joining the Audit Commission he had ten years’ experience and understanding of local government, having worked at the London Borough of Ealing in homelessness and housing strategy, and the Corporation of London, specialising in performance management.
Abdool has a Bachelors Degree in Political Economy from University College, London; a Masters in Development Studies from Bath University; and a Masters in Housing from the London School of Economics. He was previously a leading Board Member of Tower Hamlets Housing Arms’ Length Management Organisation, chairing the Performance Management Committee. He is married, and has two daughters and a step-son.
